Frequently Asked Question
Windows 10 goes out of support on October 14, 2025. All laptops that are enrolled in the SYMMETRY Management System will have an upgrade to Windows 11 automatically made available to them. This upgrade has been tested and validated by the SYMMETRY IT team, and contains additional resources for the upgrade to ensure system performance and compatibility that are not available through the normal Windows upgrade process. To check if your laptop is enrolled in the management system, click here. For more information about the SYMMETRY management system, click here.
This upgrade includes laptops that your facility may have purchased for use as @Home units. SYMMETRY does not store information about what these laptops are used for, and these laptops will receive this upgrade prompt also. Your patients may reach out to you with questions about this upgrade. If you have any laptops at your office that are not currently assigned to patients, it's recommended to upgrade them in the office before their next check-out to a patient.
Automatic Upgrade Prompt
All laptops enrolled in the SYMMETRY management system that are eligible to upgrade to Windows 11 will receive the below prompt.
You may choose to install the upgrade immediately, let your laptop automatically upgrade outside of your working hours, or have the system remind you later to perform the upgrade. If you choose Right now, the system immediately begins the upgrade and the laptop will be unavailable for approximately 2 hours. See below for information on the upgrade process. For either option besides Right now, you may at any time trigger the upgrade before the system prompts you again.
If the upgrade is not installed by the deadline shown on your laptop, the upgrade will automatically install with no option to cancel or postpone it. For this reason, it's recommended to perform the upgrade early so that you are able to control when it happens.
Triggering the Upgrade
If you chose to postpone the upgrade when asked, you may manually start the upgrade at any time by following these steps.
- Click Start, then type in Software Center. Click on the option displayed.
- Click Operating Systems on the left.
- Click Upgrade to Windows 11 Pro 24H2.
- Click Install.
Upgrade Process
If you chose to upgrade immediately when prompted, or manually in Software Center, you'll receive the confirmation screen shown below. If you chose to automatically upgrade outside of your business hours, you'll receive a countdown once that time is reached, and then the upgrade will begin automatically.
Click Install when you are ready to begin the upgrade. Once you click Install, there is no way to cancel the upgrade. Shutting down, force turning off, or disabling WiFi on your laptop may leave it in an unusable state, requiring SYMMETRY IT involvement to restore it to use. Only begin the upgrade at the end of the day when all sessions and maps have concluded, just in case the upgrade takes longer than expected. Because this upgrade involves downloading a large amount of data, it is recommended to only upgrade one laptop at a time if you have multiple in your facility.
Once the upgrade starts, you'll receive the progress dialog as shown below. Your laptop will restart several times during the process. Do not interrupt your laptop while the upgrade is in progress. You'll know the upgrade is complete when you are shown the login/lock screen without any progress dialogs on top.
Don't see the upgrade?
It can take up to 48 hours for the upgrade prompt to appear after your laptop has been enrolled in the SYMMETRY management system. If you do not see the upgrade prompt after that time, or if your laptop has already been enrolled since you received it, please contact SYMMETRY IT at the link below.
